RECORDED BY GLYN JOHNS WITH RONNIE LANE'S MOBILE STUDIO
THE FAMOUS RAINBOW CONCERT WAS ONE OF THE MORE SIGNIFICANT EVENTS IN ROCK HISTORY. IT WAS PART OF "FANFARE FOR EUROPE", A WEEK-LONG CELEBRATION OF ENGLAND'S ENTRY INTO THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET BEGINNING ON JANUARY 8 OF 1973. THE SHOW WAS ORGANIZED BY PETE TOWNSHEND AND LORD HARLECH (FATHER OF CLAPTON'S GIRLFRIEND, ALICE ORMSBY-GORE) TO BRING HIM BACK INTO THE PUBLIC ARENA AS A WORKING MUSICIAN AND GIVE HIM INCENTIVE TO QUIT HIS DRUG HABIT.
On January 13, 1973, one of the most significant events in rock music history, "The Famous Rainbow Concert," was recorded by Glyn Johns using Ronnie Lane's mobile studio. The concert was part of "Fanfare for Europe," a week-long event celebrating Britain's entry into the European Community, which began on January 8, 1973. The show, organized by Pete Townshend and Lord Harlech, was intended to reinstate Clapton as a publicly active musician and motivate him to quit his drug addiction.
SHOW NOTES
EARLY SHOW - Guitars used: "Blackie" Fender Stratocaster. On the song "Badge," the rhythm section missed a beat in the first break and only half the song was played. On the song "Presence of the Lord," Steve Winwood came in much too early.
LATE SHOW - Guitars used: Gibson Les Paul. The band played a much tighter, longer version of "Let it Rain." For their final performance, they played a third, longest version of "Layla" of the day. This was a longer show.
Details of the two shows are as follows:
1st Stage:
The guitar used was a Fender Stratocaster called "Blackie."
On "Badge," the rhythm section missed a beat in the first break, and only half the song was played.
