End of the Controversy Tour, March 3, 1982, Orpheum, Boston This high-quality audience recording of a live performance at the Controversy Theater is extremely valuable, considering how old this tour is. While the typical tour featured 10 to 11 songs, this performance clocked in at a whopping 13 songs and nearly 90 minutes, making it the longest of the Controversy tour. It seems likely that the band ended with "Let's Work," but then, feeling even more excited, they performed the even rarer "Sexuality," and then, with a satisfying encore of "Jack U Off," it felt like they were just getting carried away. The content is excellent, and the sound quality is also quite impressive, making this a must-have early Prince performance. Also included is a soundboard live performance at the Met Center in his hometown of Minneapolis on March 7th, capturing only the first half of "The Second Coming," from the tape intro to "Head." Apparently, this performance was actually recorded by Prince for a live album. He brought in equipment from LA for videography, and this recording sparked plans for Prince's first live documentary film, "Second Coming." The after-show of the day was 4Dafunk's First Avenue 82. Also included was a completely unreleased Prince outtake from the same master as this soundboard recording. The song, likely titled "2 B Alive," is 30 minutes long, and while it feels almost like a rehearsal, the sound quality feels like a real song. The performance blends Erotic City and Holy Rock, creating a truly Prince-inspired downer funk. Then, midway through, a killer cut enters, and Prince's sly, "2 B Alive, everybody working, all night!" is thrilling.
