Considered the savior of '90s soul, D'Angelo's debut album, "Brown Sugar," is arguably the greatest soul album of the hip-hop era. It's sexy, smooth, and raw. However, it would be five years before his next hit, "Voodoo," would be released. After a legendary concert at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2000, nothing happened for a long time. However, in the winter of 2011, rumors of a D'Angelo comeback began to circulate. It was said he was working on a new album and would be coming to Amsterdam. Prior to the release of "Black Messiah," D'Angelo performed a live set featuring new material at the North Sea Jazz Festival as a test run. Featuring former The Time member Jesse Johnson on guitar, hip-hop's greatest drummer Chris Dave, and D'Angelo's core bassist, Pino Palladino, this NSJ live performance featured a top-tier lineup. While previously available as a soundboard recording, this release offers a superb pro-shot, 1080p HD Blu-ray release! Tracks from his first and second albums are presented with stunning arrangements and performances, showcasing ambitious and boastful renditions of "Really Love" and "Sugah Daddy." This is an absolute must-have title for D'Angelo's signature live recordings. The live arrangement of "Devil's Pie," the dance-inducing funk of "Chicken Grease," and the mic handling of "Sugah Daddy" are reminiscent of Prince's early days. The P-Funk-infused jam in the second half is also incredibly electrifying. And before the NSJ concert, the BET Awards performance, also recorded in 1080p HD. He performed "Untitled" with great emotion, then played a new song no one had heard before, "Sugah Daddy." The music itself was so captivating that it made everyone move. Like Prince, he instructed the band to hit the notes 25 times, hitting them perfectly 25 times for a flawless finish.
