Do you know Doc Watson? This is a cool item like that. But it's a really good item. Doc Watson was a blind singer who sang American folk, country, and bluegrass, and was also a master of cross-picking on the acoustic guitar. With just one guitar, intricate bass lines and solo phrases pour out one after another. This concert features a trio of two guitars and bass, without drums. The father-son collaboration with Doc's son, Merle Watson, with whom he has teamed up before, is perfectly in sync. Merle is also a master of guitar and dobro, no less than his father, and the father-son guitar duel is the highlight of the concert. The stereo soundboard recording, with Merle on the left and Doc on the right, boasts excellent resolution and sound quality. This trio is an outstanding combination no matter what they play, from traditional music to country blues, and the dazzling guitar solos that flutter in response to Doc's call of "Merle" are superb. And the instrumental performance of the father-son guitars is breathtaking. If you like early Bob Dylan, The Byrds with Clarence White, Richard Thompson, or Fairport Convention, this is definitely a must-have item. The master recording was too long to fit on one CD due to tuning breaks between songs, but the gaps between tracks were carefully edited to fit it all on one disc. Incidentally, a few years after this concert, Marl sadly passed away in an accident, making this father-son performance by Doc and Marl a precious recording.
