Prince and 3rdEyeGirl's new band, debuted in 2013. Their Live Out Loud tour offers a rock-inspired stage that's a game changer, delivering spine-chilling performances! This ultra-high-quality recording captures the late show from their April 23rd concert at The DNA Lounge in San Francisco. The opening track is a hard rock version of Let's Go Crazy. Endorphinmachine's driving vocals propel the band forward. The guitar playing in the background is faithful to the studio recording, likely Donna's work. They start with a studio track from Screwdriver, asking if they'd mind a little lip-syncing, before launching into full-on Screwdriver. Hannah's fast drumming transforms She's Always In My Hair into a melancholic alternate melody. The guitar is distorted yet refreshingly rock-inspired! Later in the set, Liathach's instrumental fades away, serving as a grand intro to the melancholic I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man. Prince's melancholic guitar and compelling vocals are the hallmarks of this track. Then there's Plectrum Electrum, a new track from the time, featuring a hooky riff and Hannah's cool drum and guitar ensemble. From the most expressive performance, the new track Fix Ur Life Up features a groove between the bass and drums, with Prince singing passionately over the top. It's a captivating live performance, pop yet rock-infused. Then there's I Like It There, featuring a call-and-response (yeah, yeah, yeah, I like it there, where?) and Hannah's drum solo, making it the longest version yet. It ends quietly, but that tranquil atmosphere carries over to the next track, When We're Dancing And Close. It's a very early Prince-esque performance, starting and ending with a falsetto, and featuring beautiful, serene acoustic guitar. Then, the guitar suddenly shifts to piercing, revealing Bambi's youthful playing. Finally, the new track 2Y2D is here. While the song was soulful, the driving guitar here adds a satisfying rock vibe. The fluent vocals are also superb. It then transitions ingeniously into "Cause and Effect"! The mood then shifts to a chaotic, Jimi Hendrix-esque psychedelic vibe, with phrases from "Compassion" popping up. Crimson and Clover is performed with precision and enjoyment, but what's even more shocking is the slow version of the following "Let's Go." The melody is quite melancholic, enough to give you goosebumps. Then, as the guitar gradually enters and plays for about two minutes, it speeds up. It transforms into a very punkish version of "Let's Go," in a way closer to the original. Then, like a theme song, "Plectrum Electrum" plays again, and finally, a cough as if clearing phlegm ends the performance with a bang.
Furthermore, at the late show at The DNA Lounge on April 24th, Prince showcased his best vocals. Starting with relaxed drumming, he performed a hard rock version of "Let's Go Crazy." A distorted, rock-infused guitar riff gives the track a Zeppelin-esque feel. Let's Work lacks keyboards, but the guitars make up for it! The alternate arrangement features wah-wah rhythm guitar sounds, twin rock riffs, and the usual precise, groovy bass lines, creating a truly fantastic arrangement. U Got The Look is a very funky version, featuring cutting rhythms reminiscent of James Brown's "Mother Popcorn." Prince's screams here are incredible as he launches into "Endorphinmachine"! The guitar solo is thrilling, too! Prince says he needs to lip-sync for one song, and plays the studio version, but as the guitar and other instrumentals kick in, Prince unleashes his spirited vocals. It turns out the lip-syncing was a lie. Donna's guitar solo also incorporates phrases that break the melody, making it uniquely original. She's Always In My Hair begins with a normal verse, then a melancholic riff appears, changing the tone. This is a longer version, featuring changes to the lyrics and a call-and-response with the audience. Next comes Forever In My Life, where the rhythm begins. A long bass solo, Hannah's live drumming, and a call-and-response with a drawn-out "four" in Forever, along with funky guitar cutting, create an interesting development. Then, for Purple Rain, Prince sings amidst a flowing piano melody. This performance of Purple Rain could best be described as a piano version. This atmosphere continues as Adore, a completely new development played like a medley. And this new version of Adore features a very flowing piano and effective guitar wah! This is a different arrangement of Adore with a more complex structure than usual. It begins with a slightly melancholic guitar intro, followed by a slow, bluesy version of I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man. This atmosphere then leads into guitar. The performance is so thick it feels like there are more than two layers of guitar. "This is Plectrum Electrum," Prince shouts, and a Jimmy Page-esque riff bursts forth. It's Plectrum Electrum! The way the guitars overlap, almost harmonically, is amazing. The new song, "Fix Ur Life Up," features a funkier arrangement than the studio track, with a strong growl from the bass! Then, it roughly transforms into "I Like It There." The solo bursts in early, and the song develops quickly, but then suddenly takes on a melancholic quality. There's a call-and-response of "yeah-yeah-yeah," and then a forceful switch to Bambi. Just having another guitar in the background really makes Bambi amazing. And now, a sampler set. "Sign O The Times" features a call-and-response of "oh-lio, oh-oh." With both the bass and drums making sounds, it feels like a fusion of a band and a sampler set. The background playing on "Hot Thing" is so tight that it's hard to call it a sampler set. The guitar cutting sounds are vivid in Housequake, and the first-ever phrase, "Ain't no party like purple party, purple party don't stop," is heard in Pheromone. The final track, "Mr. Goodnight," creates a goodnight, goodbye vibe. But there's one more song to play: Stratus. It has a different feel than usual, with guitar cutting and a slightly minor key. The guitar also incorporates a phrase from The Sailor's Hornpipe (a traditional song), creating a development never heard before at the time. Cowbell adds a touch of lightness, and the final track features some unexpected and rare elements. The LOL tour is definitely not to be underestimated.
