In 2010, Prince was named one of the most influential people in the world in Time magazine's 100th issue, and the commemorative event, the Time 100 Gala, was held in New York on May 5, 2010. Following the event, Prince performed an after-show at a small club called Village Underground. The after-show had a $10 cover charge, and no one even knew Prince was going to play. However, a soundboard recording of this rare gig has now been released! It begins with Shelby and others, with Shelby adding ad-libbed vocals on "Feel Good" and "Right Here," hyping up the crowd! As the sound comes together, the keyboards begin playing "I Feel 4 U," and to everyone's surprise, Shelby, Liv, and Elissa begin soulful singing! Shelby bursts into a "slurp slurp slurp" and her signature shout! The sound is an arrangement you'd only hear in a keyboard-driven aftershow! Around this point, Prince appears, singing softly, then proudly shows off his guitar! Then, the keyboard riff from "Controversy" plays lightly! While Prince shows off his ease with his guitar strumming, the full Controversy performance begins! Prince sings, but he's more focused on his guitar. The keyboards gradually fade, and Prince's guitar jams take over, which is thrilling. Prince's bluesy, best! Liv Warfield then takes over on vocals, ushering in a long-awaited rendition of "I'll Never Be Another Fool," a song Prince wrote for Shaka Khan! Liv's vocals are just as powerful as Shaka's, and while her delivery is a bit off-kilter, it's still incredibly soulful! Cassandra and Mr. Hayes also play keyboard solos, and Elissa even scats in. Compared to Shaka Khan and Prince's performance at Cafe De Paris in 1998, the sound is much more jam-like. Then Shelby and the others begin rapping, creating a song with lyrics for the chorus, "If You Wanna Dance." Horn-like keyboard sounds and elegant piano are also present, with Hayes and Cassandra expertly dividing up the roles, as you'd expect from NPG! The performance gradually slows down as Feeling Good and Shelby come on stage and begin scatting casually. Suddenly, a cutting sound reminiscent of Prince, but with a much lighter sound, is introduced. And yes, Quinton Dean, who joined the band at this time, appears! A slow but mellow jam completes the track, creating a cool finish! It's like a rehearsal between Prince and his band, and you can really appreciate the band's current abilities. This is a fantastic gig that only those involved can experience! In addition to the CD featuring the remastered soundboard recordings by Pimpsandwich, a special edition will be released! This is astonishing! First, the original soundboard recording before the remastering is included alongside Prince's new song from 2010, "Hot Summer," which leaked on his 52nd birthday! This exquisite tune features a soulful female vocalist and a pounding keyboard backing riff reminiscent of The Time's "Shake!", with Prince's slightly lowered voice intertwined! It's a lively, non-rock, three-minute pop number with a melody that will stick in your mind once you hear it! And that's not all in the special edition! It also comes with a compilation video DVD! It includes pro-shot footage of the aforementioned Village Underground! While it's a live streaming recording, not a professional shot like the TV broadcast, it's a fantastic capture of the performance at the time! Scenes of Prince playing with his back to him, guitarist Quinton Dean's playing, and the heroic figure of the female chorus! Even in a small venue, Prince and NPG exude an aura of movement. Also included is a poor-sounding audience recording of Controversy, a short 10-second clip of Prince and his band performing at the Time 100 Gala, and an interview with Quinton Dean! Only this special edition can offer the ultimate combination of Prince's soundboard and pro-shot footage!!!
