◆Glastonbury Festival, England, June 1989

Fela Ransom Kuti. Born in Nigeria in 1938. Died in 1997. Fela Ransom Kuti was the founder and originator of the "Afrobeat" funk sound, a fusion of 1950s African popular music known as highlife, heavily influenced by jazz, and the funk of JB. This soundboard recording of the legendary Black President's live performance at the 1989 Glastonbury Festival is here. His band, The Egypt 80, with whom he has performed since the 1980s, presents a stunning 20-minute track, "Overtake," featuring endlessly repeating guitar riffs, a freaky horn section, and a surging rhythm section.
