Pure Funk? Yes, that legendary label that possessed exquisite recordings but vanished into obscurity without ever receiving a press release... This is the CDR release of what is effectively its second title. It's a recording of the legendary 1984 Purple Rain Tour Hometown Christmas Show! This is the first night of the legendary five-show series held from December 23rd to 28th, selling 90,000 tickets. While the latter half of "Baby I'm A Star" and "Purple Rain" are indeed missing, it features a beautiful "Free," the poppy "Take Me With U," the brilliant scat singing in "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" (shifting between falsetto and low notes), a rare performance of "Dirty Mind" with tambourine shaking, and a delightfully lively "I Wanna Be Your Lover," along with a fantastic piano set. Eddie M's saxophone is also featured on "Baby I'm A Star."
During this triumphant return, Prince finished his masterpiece album Around the World in a Day at Christmas, but at the same time, he performed songs from Purple Rain at the live show, switching gears and delivering a fantastic, high-energy performance.
