This release features an FM broadcast recording from the Boston stop of the tour supporting *Secondhand Daylight*, the second album by Magazine—the brilliant British collective.
"Ex-Buzzcocks"—that introduction is no longer necessary to define them; this album showcases the true essence of Magazine, delivering a genuine New Wave sound that could well be described as "progressive punk." You can fully savor the superb basslines and the distinctive, soulful groove brought by bassist Barry Adamson—who would later go on to become an original member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.
John McGeoch—a guitarist known for influencing countless others, most notably John Frusciante—is in top form here. I highly recommend listening at high volume to the moment where Dave Formula’s keyboards transform the classic song "Boredom" into a quintessential Magazine track. It drives home the fact that the sound simply wouldn't be Magazine without Devoto’s uniquely viscous, highly distinctive vocals.
The run of covers—spanning from Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band to Sly & The Family Stone—is also exhilarating.
There was likely no other band in the punk and New Wave scene of that era with quite the same level of musical sensibility.
