A truly unique day in Miles Davis's live career has arrived. This is the Ann Arbor performance on February 21, 1970. As the title suggests, this is a rare live recording featuring John McLaughlin. Of course, McLaughlin also participated in "Bitches Brew" and the soundtrack "Jack Johnson," and was one of the key figures in Miles's electrification of his instruments. However, live collaborations between them were rare. At the time, McLaughlin was extremely busy with Tony Williams' Lifetime project, his own projects, and the founding of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Currently, this is the only time you can hear a live performance with this lineup. Naturally, as it is a valuable recording, several titles have been released so far, but our VoodooDown Records, thanks to the strength of being supervised by the So What label, officially acquired the original master and remastered it. The recording is of the highest quality to date. Thankfully, McLaughlin's guitar is captured clearly in this recording, and his wildness is clearly recorded. From the very first song, "It's About That Time," you can glimpse his strained guitar solo and cutting reminiscent of the soundtrack "Jack Johnson," and after two cool-down songs, DeJohnette's drumming intensifies again, heating up and cascading into "Bitches Brew." And the ultimate highlight is "Mascaraello," which was highly praised by the late Yasuki Nakayama, a Miles Davis collector and critic well-known to fans. It's so overwhelming that it leaves you speechless and even forgetting to blink.
While it's not a recording that boasts the delicate clarity of a soundboard, its raw, powerful sound is actually the best way to convey the band's true performance.
