1. We Be Jammin' Up In Montreux (feat. Prince & The NPG Horns)
The much-rumored 2013 pro-shot footage from the Montreux Jazz Festival has finally been released! Official, top-quality footage! This complete set includes three shows on 4 DVDs, plus footage from the aftershow!
Show 1 sees Prince, without playing any instruments, primarily singing, and even directing the band members as band leader, acting like a music teacher. But Prince's style isn't just strict; it's also about having fun, even agitating with a handheld microphone. This flexible musicianship is complemented by the exhilarating drumming of Third Eye Girls' Hannah, the solid guitar of Donna, and, above all, the sparkling, cool guitar cutting of Ida, wearing sunglasses! The album features a plethora of rare tracks, including Strays of the World from Crystal Ball, the eclectic Days of Wild, the unreleased Big City, NPG versions of Andy Allo's Superconductor and People Pleaser, rare renditions of Mutiny, Old Friends 4 Sale, and Get On The Boat, as well as new tracks like Ain't Gonna Miss U When You Gone, F.U.N.K., Dark, and Extraloveable. The arrangements, accented by the NPG Horns, create a hyper-realistic feel. All the players are talented performers and seem to be having just as much fun as Prince. The footage also captures the entire atmosphere of the moment, including the time it takes for Prince to leave the stage and come back on stage, which fans will be happy to know is free of poor editing. For the final song, "Purple Rain," Prince duets with Shelby without a guitar, singing in a melancholic, unstructured style—a rare performance.
And, although the quality is a little lower, here's a pro-shot aftershow! Larry Graham and GCS join in, followed by members of NPG. Prince suddenly borrows Ida's guitar and joins in at the perfect moment, then returns to the wings once satisfied. The video then moves on to the phrase "Controversy," where Prince is secretly playing keyboards. Before you know it, it's "Tell Me What It Is," and Prince delivers some seriously cool guitar chops that will give you goosebumps.
On the second day, the band members really started dancing from the raging dance medley to Let's Work, which became a true dance competition. However, the band stopped playing the same songs as in Show 1, and gave different instructions to the other members, so you can enjoy these differences. This is also a must-see live performance, right up to the funky Party Up finale, which gradually builds up.
The third and final day was the culmination of the Live Out Loud tour, centered around 3rd EyeGirl. While there was partial footage of the live performances from 2013 onwards, there was no complete version like this, and no professional camerawork. How wonderful it is to enjoy Prince's rock guitar work that doesn't make you feel his age at all! This pro shot allows you to see not only how Donna and Prince share guitar duties, but also how Joshua Welton interacts on stage, and even get a maniacal look at it! Mixing new songs like "The Max" and "Breakdown," rare tracks, and band versions of sampler sets, this long, over-two-hour set was a culmination of the LOL tour. While Prince's guitar work was sure to grab attention, the highlight for me was Hannah. Her drumming was excellent, but her hunched eyebrows were also adorable. The final sampler set saw the audience come onstage, creating a clubby atmosphere reminiscent of an after-show. Larry Graham unleashed a blistering bass blast on "Love." As the set drew to a close and the crowd began to leave, Prince continued with Housequake, expressing his displeasure at the cameraman's continued filming despite his complaints about his face, and ended the song. The camera also shifted to a close-up of Prince, shifting to a full-length shot and then to the band members. Even so, Prince continued to give instructions to his band members while delivering a killer Housequake jam. The video captures the thrilling moments of this performance, which cannot be conveyed through sound alone.
