The essence of Prince's madness is revealed in this period, sandwiched between the Act 1 and Act 2 tours, when he suddenly changed his name and announced his retirement on his birthday in 1993. This release delves into the secrets of this period! First, we have the rare rehearsal recordings from immediately after the name change and immediately before the Act 2 tour, released in 4- and 3-disc sets, containing all of the recordings! While some of the sound quality is poor, it's packed with rare performances! It begins with a rare rehearsal of "2gether" and "Interactive" shortly after the single release, featuring never-before-heard effects. It also features an eight-minute blues jam, "Sometimes It Snows In April," and an instrumental rendition of "Poor Goo," only available during the time Prince was secretly recording The Undertaker! The recordings also feature PFUNK phrases from "1999," "Dr Funkenstein," and "Let's Take It To The Stage," sandwiched between "You Got The Love," creating an after-show feel. Plus, you can see the band rehearsing and experimenting with many of their new songs! But each of these intense rehearsals comes with some incredible bonus items! First, Pt. 1 (4 CDRs) features the final performance of Act 1, just before the name change! Even at this point, Prince was still conscious of the name change, and there are a number of unexpected and rare versions! Includes a long live medley version of "Love 2's The 9's"/"And God Crated Woman," an unconventional performance combining "When U Were Mind" and "Alphabet St.", "Purple Rain" with Race lyrics, and an extremely rare performance of "Call the Law" from this period! Prince even makes a cryptic remark, asking, "What would you do if I changed my name?" While the second half of the encore is likely incomplete, it's almost complete, making this a completely unreleased live performance! And there's a secret bonus: a soundboard recording of "Gett Off" from that day! And Pt. 2 (3 CDRs) features the first day of Act 2, also completely unreleased! As this is Act 2's premier concert, it's an unconventional and trial show! Needless to say, there are some changes from ACT 1, but surprisingly, the piano segment is almost entirely omitted (only an instrumental version of Diamonds & Pearls is inserted), but instead, a plethora of new songs from that time are unveiled for the first time as an encore! The audience was surely surprised! Come is a somewhat loose early version, still in the trial and error stage, while Endorphinemachine and Peach are top-notch rock versions, consciously positioned as the highlight of the ending. And then there's Prince's angry MC, "What's my name?", and a live performance that delves into the truth about Prince! Both of these bonus items were recorded with a premium audience! Despite stating that he wouldn't be recording new material during this name change, Prince was recording The Undertaker, writing and performing new songs such as Come.
