Mars It's been a year since Volta disbanded, but ANTEMASQUE, the much-anticipated new unit formed by Omar Rodriguez-Lopez and Cedric Bixler-Zavala, appeared at Summer Sonic Tokyo 2014's Midnight Sonic! Mars Volta, now known as ANTEMASQUE, opened the night-time performance on the Sonic Stage on the first day of Summer Sonic, Midnight Sonic. While the band has shrunk from the large Mars Volta lineup to just four members, their high-energy songs are closer to their roots in At the Drive-In. Accompanying them on bass is Omar's younger brother, Malfred. His chemistry with Dave, who joined Mars Volta as drummer, is excellent, delivering a performance that rivals the two main acts. From the compact song structure in the first half of the live performance to the epic song in the second half that was nearly 20 minutes long, it was a high-energy, explosive live performance throughout.
