Originals is an album that compiles Prince's original demos and original versions of songs he wrote for other artists. Following the leak of the Diamonds and Love FLAC recording, this album compiles these recordings from 1990 to 1992, including versions by the artists who provided them. By interleaving these recordings, we can see how the singers sang and any changes were made to the arrangements. While some singers stayed faithful to Prince's versions, others added effects or adapted their own vocal styles. We also examine how female artists such as Rosie Gaines, Jevetta Steele, Mavis Staples, and Patti LaBelle responded to Prince's direction. How did Prince want Tevin Campbell to sing? On "House In Order," Prince, Levi Ceasar, and Michael created the backing, with Prince omitting the role and Steels on the chorus, performing with the band. There are also songs written for Sheila E. that have only been performed live, and songs like MC Flash that only exist in rehearsals. There are also unexpected tracks, such as the one used in a Pepsi commercial.

During a transitional period for Paisley Park Records, Prince composed many songs for the label in an attempt to develop the record company. After changing its name, he founded NPG Records, and continued to work independently. His "Originals" and "Recordings" from that period represent the pinnacle of his career as a songwriter.
