Prince and Larry Graham's relationship grew even closer during the 1998 New Power Soul Tour. Larry had been appearing as a guest on the Jam Of The Year tour since 1997, and Prince had produced GCS's album, and the GCS set, featuring tracks from that album, is now considered a rare performance. Chaka Khan was also there.
This set includes two DVDRs, totaling three hours, covering all the various footage from the Rockefeller Center mini-concert and sound check.
First, DVDR1 compiles the broadcast footage from Rockefeller Center and further pro-shot footage from leaked sources. While the New Power Soul Tour doesn't exist in the pro-shots, the tour's key numbers are pro-shots, making it a rare street performance. The set list includes "Free," composed by Prince and Larry. Pro-shot footage from leaked sources shows Prince happily playing Larry Graham and Sly-related performances. Prince likely also wanted Larry's approval, so he followed Larry with his impressive guitar phrases and band baton, allowing you to enjoy the unique performances of this time in the pro-shots.
DVDR2 is primarily composed of footage of the same performance filmed by the audience, and also includes footage of an early morning sound check. There are two angles, both shot from the right side of the stage, with one clearly in a better position, shot much closer to the stage. Even though this was before the days of smartphone photography, it's surprising how close the footage is to Prince playing the keyboard.
