Werchter Boutique, Festival Park, Werchter, Belgium, July 10, 2010

Free Boot Generation has released the first aftershow from the reevaluated 2010 20Ten European tour. The sound quality is simply amazing! The soundboard-level cheers are minimal, yet the backing is immersive! This is a superb audience recording with just the right amount of vocal presence! First up is a live performance from Graham Central Station. After a wonderful, gospel-esque performance of "People," Prince joins in on guitar on "Dance To The Music," and it's great to see this included! Starting with a soulful, layered a cappella chorus, this arrangement is a refreshing departure from Prince's covers! Prince's guitar really digs in! Following that, Larry's bouncing bass comes to the forefront, creating a funky "The Jam" and "Thank You," a wonderful performance that makes you think it was Larry who wrote them. Meanwhile, Prince's guitar solo is a fantastic funk phrase! And unlike the main track from the 20Ten tour, "I Want To Take You Higher" features Larry at the forefront, creating a different groove! The strength of this item is that you can enjoy the unique charms of both Larry and Prince! While the crowd yells "Hire!", NPG replaces GCS. A hustle and bustle erupts as the band adjusts their instruments. A keyboard riff emerges, and Fred's harp, a key component of this special period, joins in. Prince then appears. Then, as if to control the crowd, Shelby launches into an aggressive performance! As expected of an after-party, he launches straight into "When Will We Be Paid?"! It's a completely unreliable version that sounds like blues but isn't faithful to the original! Instead of guitar, the harp and keyboards provide powerful, hooky phrases, creating a superb development that's sure to send shivers down your spine! Prince's funky guitar and rhythmic piano flow in, ushering in "Be Happy," with Shelby on vocals! This version, with its increased depth, is incredible! Joshua unleashes a booming bass chopper, while Prince plays self-aware guitar! Prince then gives a MC praising Larry and the others, followed by a freaky intro to "Cream," where Prince finally takes the vocals! The arrangement is very after-show-esque, with a swaying swing, and the vocals disappear, resulting in a jam that lasts for over eight minutes! The highlight of the after-show finally arrives: "Future Soul Song," which Prince reportedly said was his favorite song on the 20Ten album! Starting with a lonely guitar intro, Prince announces, "We're going to play a song called Future Soul Song," before understated backing, and the backing vocals begin singing! Honestly, it's still in the preparation stage, and the performance is unfinished, but its charm is fully conveyed! Fred Yone's harp is also a nice touch! Then, we move on to the jam of "All the Critics Love U In Belgium." With sparkling keyboards, booming bass, a spastic harp, and Prince's low vocals, this understated sound gradually elevates to a heart-pounding, groovy sound! Cassandra O'Neill's jazzy piano adds a touch of after-show freakishness to this rock-solid version! The backing vocals are Bobby Byrd's "I Know You Got Soul," or rather, they sing "I Know You Got Soul" with their own soulful, original phrasing. Prince's guitar gets even freakier, creating a different vibe for "Sexy Dancer Vs Le Freak." Then, without a pause, Prince accelerates another funky guitar riff, and the backing vocals launch into "Northside," creating an even more after-show vibe! The backing vocals seem to be from "Partyman," but Prince changes up the phrasing and the chorus shifts from "Water" to "What Have You Done For Me Lately" and "I Wish," creating a long jam that keeps the audience intrigued as they wait for what's next! The final track is "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore," with Prince softly singing and playing piano! The backing vocals build up a soulful energy in the second half, and the band launches into the chorus of "Please Please Please," a song made famous by James Brown's mantle show. Prince chimes in with "Please please don't go," turning the performance into a gospel competition, and the show ends on a mellow note! A completely different development from the main show! Truly a Free Boot Generation classic! A special edition will also be released at the same time! Here's a compilation of video highlights from Werchter's main show, which took place before the aftershow! This is a collection of audience recordings that captures the moment as vividly as possible, including beautiful HD footage and cleverly blending two types of footage, as well as different angles! At a total of 52 minutes, it's well worth watching! This is a must-have special edition that explores the after-show and main show of the 20Ten tour through audio and video! It's a must-have item, as it's a fantastic after-show!!!

On November 6, 2010, Prince performed again at Viage, the same venue where he previously performed his aftershow. This unconventional live performance, incorporating the best of the aftershow into the main show, is one of his most outstanding performances! FBG has released this complete, immersive, ultra-high-quality audience recording. The quality is comparable to the November 3rd Milan performance, considered the best of the tour!

The Milan live performance can be found here.

While the main show usually lasts about two hours, this performance was an astounding 170 minutes in total, nearly three hours! It's safe to say it's the tour's most important item! First up is "Joy In Repetition," a moody jazzy jam featuring floating flute (actually recreated on keyboard) over piano plucks reminiscent of a run-down jazz bar! Renato's leadership is on full display! "Stratus" opens with John Blackwell's drumming, sounding like he's about to explode, and the keyboards take on a slightly progressive dynamic. Prince plays a subdued guitar, but Ida's bass delivers a powerful groove! "Sometimes It Snows In April" is a rare instrumental, with the piano gracefully tracing the melody! "Delirious" opens with wah-wah-infused guitar chops, a slightly slower, more innovative version! Prince again plays the melody on guitar, without singing, and incorporates rock 'n' roll and blues-infused phrases, creating a jazzy instrumental that shows off Prince's guitar technique! And then there's the surprising "Soft And Wet"! The backing is very similar to the studio recording, and there's no clever arrangement for a live version. Again, Prince doesn't sing. What's even more surprising is the live re-creation of the keyboard-heavy section from the second half of the studio recording of "I Wanna Be Your Lover"! Naturally, Prince can't sing, and instead, rock-esque guitars are used. Then, "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad" is about to be played, but Prince ends it with just the intro. Instead, he plays "Sexy Dancer." He calls Shelby over, and you'd think she'd launch into "Le Freak," but instead, Prince shouts "Hah!" and plays a guitar phrase that sounds familiar. At this point, you realize this is an old-school instrumental medley. The piano also features a studio-recorded "Sexy Dancer" solo. Then, Shelby yells, "It's a party!" and launches into a cover of Rick James' "Give It To Me Baby!" The slightly unorthodox vocals are powerful! The bass, piano, and drumming cover the song as best they can, but the occasional guitar riffs add a wonderful accent. "Ain't no party like NPG party," Shelby repeatedly shouts, and Colin Colin's guitar cutting in the second half is a delight! From there, the song cleverly develops into the usual Sexy Dancer VS Le Freak and "I Know You Got Soul" sung by the backing vocals! Then, a Party Up-style instrumental and guitar cuttings add to the funkiness, before moving on to Uptown. This is where Prince finally begins to sing. On "Raspberry Beret," Prince sings properly with the backing vocals, a departure from his usual style. On "Cream," he sings the vocals halfway through, saying the lyrics first and letting the audience sing along. The middle of "Let's Work" adds a funkier version than the main show, incorporating Ida's bass and cheesy keyboard sounds! "U Got The Look" creates a more upbeat mood than usual, and then the funk continues flowing smoothly into "Controversy"! Prince belts out "I Know You Got Soul" as if he's screaming! They also add other unique phrases, repeating the chant "(Eye Like) Funky Music" over and over, and the band continues playing until they're completely exhausted! And then, shockingly, they play She's Always In My Hair for the first time in ages! Prince sings, even though it's been a while! The guitar also features some rock riffs, making it incredibly cool! The whole thing is filled with an earthy atmosphere! The vocals don't really start until the third minute, as if to encourage the audience to chant "Dreamer," and then they slowly add their vocals. They play to their heart's content, resulting in a superb performance that lasts over eight minutes! And then, surprisingly, "I Feel For You" suddenly pops out! The vocals are developed with backing vocals, creating an unconventional pattern. And then, even more unusual, Chelsea Rodgers! The bass line in this song is very groovy, and with Ida playing, John Blackwell's tight drumming, and the heavy keyboards, these elements make this arrangement different from 21 Nights. Then Prince suggested playing Dance (Disco Heat), and the disco atmosphere continued, leading into Dance (Disco Heat)! A slightly slower version led into Baby I'm A Star. Prince's vocals sounded a little sluggish here. Finally, he introduced the band members, asked "What's my name?", and ended with the audience responding, "Prince!" It would have been strange to end the set there, but they kept playing! And then there was The Love We Make! Such majestic songs, when they appeared as the finale or at a turning point, evoked Purple Rain-esque emotions after an inflated, funky dance routine. But it wasn't over yet! It was another long-awaited performance of Get On The Boat! Prince sang America over Prince's sustained guitar chops, followed by a grand intro featuring honky piano, pounding drums, and a riotous backing track, before Prince asked, "Are you ready to get on the boat?" They start talking, and then, after a five-minute wait, they start playing! The arrangement is more jazzy than Latin, and Elissa's vocals evoke a tamer vibe! John Blackwell and Ida's drumming is funky, and Cassandra's keyboard work is reminiscent of Stevie Wonder! They play a new version of "Get On The Boat"! And then they move on to a rare cover, "Which Way Is Up!" The heavy bass is super funky, and the groovy performance defies the stereotypes of disco and evolves into all sorts of freaky twists. As you'd expect from a professional band like NPG, Prince says they don't play techno, but the keyboard phrases somehow sound techno-esque. Which is better? Either way! A medley of "I Want To Take You Higher" unfolds, and just when you think the song is coming to a climax, Prince isn't done yet! He brings us to the true finale, "All The Critics Love U In Brussels"! The whole band is manic! How long can this groove last? Prince and NPG, a special gig that's completely unexpected and impossible not to love!
The special edition also comes with a 39-minute DVDR compiling this rare live performance as well as rare after-show footage. The Viage footage is only about five minutes long, but other footage includes New Morning, including previously unseen footage of "It's Time To Get Funky," and just under five minutes of footage from the still-unearthed November 12th pre-show in Abu Dhabi. While all the songs are partially included, this is a must-have collection packed with rare, behind-the-scenes footage for the discerning viewer!
