The Necromancer series, which reissues rare titles from handmade labels by collectors for collectors that were only distributed in very limited quantities, using officially acquired masters, now features Headless Hawk, a top-tier jazz collector's label.
This is a live recording of Soft Machine from 2009. Judging from the timing, it was probably when "Soft Machine Legacy" was still the official name. Like many other progressive rock bands, Soft Machine has gone through numerous member changes, but a few years ago, Allan Holdsworth left and was replaced by John Etheridge, creating the "Soft Machine Legacy." Come to think of it, Etheridge also filled the void left by Holdsworth in the 70s. With Elton Dean gone and Hugh Hopper having passed away the month before this concert, the number of familiar faces has decreased, but the longest-serving member, John Marshall, remains. And this lineup would continue to be a stable one going forward. There are a few places where the volume is inconsistent, but aside from that, it's a high-quality audience recording that could easily be mistaken for a soundboard recording.
