*The Best of the Beatles* was a greatest hits album planned exclusively for Japan to coincide with the band's first tour of the country in 1966. Although a unique Japanese tracklist of 16 songs was selected and test pressings were even manufactured, the project was cancelled due to a lack of approval from the UK headquarters. Known among Beatles researchers as a "lost record," this album is now faithfully reissued as a strictly limited edition CD featuring a paper sleeve and obi strip. All tracks are sourced from the original 1960s analog recordings; while "I Want to Hold Your Hand," "She Loves You," "Love Me Do," and "P.S. I Love You" are presented in simulated stereo, the other tracks are direct transfers from analog tape, faithfully reproducing the sound of the era—distinct from modern digital remasters. Although a "chick" design by the young prodigy artist Claude Okamoto was originally planned for the cover, it was never realized due to the release's cancellation; consequently, no original jacket exists. This release features a reproduction that follows the style of various Odeon "Best of" compilations from that time, complete with an obi strip that mimics the original design. In place of the standard cover art, the inner sleeve perfectly reproduces both sides of the test pressing's label design, allowing fans to see the actual details—such as the tracklist and catalog number—of this "phantom record."
It is said that only a handful of these test pressings exist, making *The Best of The Beatles* a highly coveted, ultra-rare collector's item—arguably even harder to find than the "Butcher Cover" or the "Gold Parlophone" issues.
