This album certainly aims to capture Prince's complete recordings, both on vinyl and CD. However, Fun With Vinyl is particular about sound. Playback was performed on a Technics SL-1200MK2 record player, and the audio was recorded to DAT tape on a Sony PCM-R300 via a Yamaha RX-Z1 audio/video receiver. The audio was then imported to a PC using a Turtle Beach Catalina sound card and Cool Edit Pro software, where it was remastered, including removing clicks, and converted into digital WAV files. The sound quality is top-notch. Another groundbreaking feature is the inclusion of edited versions not previously included in the Anthology series, as well as B-sides that were omitted because Prince was not involved. While not associated with Prince, the album also includes works by artists with connections to Prince, both before and after him.
This Volume 5 is divided into Parts 1 and 2. Part 2, Disc 1, follows on from George Clinton's remix of Part 2, and features a remastering by funksoulmusic of the now-out-of-print "The Cinderella Theory" CD from George Clinton's Paisley Park Records, not Fun With Vinyl. While Prince is said to have had no input, there are rumors that Prince was heavily involved, albeit uncredited. Be sure to give it a listen and see for yourself. Tweakin' and Goin' On, featuring Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss, seem to have Prince's involvement, and Serious Slammin', whose composer is unknown, may also have Prince's involvement. Airboud is also a cool song, but it also contains a Prince-esque sound. Disc 2 features T.C. Ellis' remix of Prince's Miss Thang, a Pusycat remix featuring George Clinton on a T.C. Ellis track, and a remix of New Power Generation's Superhero. And, while not Prince's input, it's a track not included on Mavis Staples' album Time Waits For No One.
