This release captures a live performance from Johnny Winter's 2013 US tour, recorded on November 16 at The Tangier in Akron, Ohio. It features a rare performance by his trio lineup. It is truly moving to see that—assuming his health was holding up—he continued to perform every month throughout 2013, starting in January, even if the number of shows was limited. While this trio performance (with Johnny on vocals and guitar) may lack the raw intensity of his late-70s heyday, listening to it fills one with a sense of nostalgia and a desire to cheer him on. You can fully enjoy the "Johnny sound"—undiminished and vital—through the phrases he occasionally delivers and his vocal interjections between songs. Regarding sound quality: although it is an audience recording, the venue's modest size and the excellent microphone placement result in a stable recording with a remarkably direct feel. There are no issues with clarity or the sense of presence.
