This is audio from Madonna's 1987 "Who's That Girl Tour." It couples two Mountain View performances from July 20th and 21st. While there are many Madonna collector's items, most are from the 2000s or later, making this a surprisingly rare release of audio from this period. The reason I titled this tour "Surprisingly" is because, to use a Michael Jackson analogy, it's a must-see live performance that represents the pinnacle of 80s pop, like the "Bad Tour." It's a tour that packs Madonna's two early masterpiece albums, "Like a Virgin" and "True Blue," into a performance with incredible freshness. The beginning is almost a medley of songs played one after the other, and in the latter half, each song is played carefully with talk interspersed throughout. There's even a hidden gem of a ballad, "Live to Tell," a truly understated selection. And the vocals on the flamenco-influenced, exotic masterpiece "La Isla Bonita," which begins with a slightly teasing intro arrangement, are incredibly expressive, sometimes husky, sometimes punkish and crushed. Anyone who lived through the 80s will have heard most of these songs. Young fans who have only heard "Hung Up," which samples ABBA's "Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!", are sure to discover new charms. While it's an audience recording, the equipment used is similar to that of Mike Millard, the legendary figure in audience recording, making it miraculously high-quality considering it was recorded in the 80s. This is an essential collection capturing the peak of the Queen of Pop's career in the 80s.
