Love 4 One Another Charities Tour, State University Events Center Arena, San Jose, April 19, 1997

Emancipation is a masterpiece. The tour that accompanied it, the Jam Of The Year, featured many songs from the album that are no longer performed. Listening to tracks like Jam Of The Year, Face Down, Get Yo Groove On, Mr. Happy, and Sleep Around, it's hard not to appreciate how danceable and amazing this tour was. Surprisingly, the second half of the tour turned out to be the best set, so this San Jose show on April 11, 1997, can be seen as a test run of Prince's live ideas. The funky arrangements unique to this period, omitted from "17 Days," are also fantastic! They also play Sexy MF, a track that is no longer performed for religious reasons! But the ultimate premiere here is the performance of The Holy River, a classic hailed as the best track from the Emancipation album! For some reason, it was barely performed on tour, making it a rare piece, and it hasn't been performed on any tour since! Be sure to enjoy its beauty here. The jam in the second half lasts for 20 minutes, provocatively launching into a funk contest, saying, "Everyone can go home, we're just here to play!" This live performance was released on the now-defunct Optimum label under the title Free. However, this release is from a different master! And this master is clearly a top-quality audience recording with excellent sound quality!
