【THE ALTERNATE ALBUM COLLECTION】
The "Alternate Album Collection" series is a new, overseas original compilation that thoroughly explores Beatles' original album-related sound sources based on the latest updates. It's a new reference collection carefully selected from a wide variety of interesting Beatles sound sources, from newly discovered, never-before-seen tracks to original recordings. From the latest multi-track remixes to unreleased studio sessions and various versions, numerous unreleased and unearthed recordings that have been repeatedly updated are reconstructed after meticulous examination of their sound quality and editing. This is a noteworthy collector's edition series with the latest editing that thoroughly explores "alternative" sound sources that cannot be heard through the limited publicly released recordings.
This is the Beatles' sixth official original album, released in the UK on December 3, 1965. The double A-side single "We Can Work It Out / Day Tripper," not included on the album, was also released simultaneously and both reached number one on the UK charts. The album title originates from the slang term "plastic soul," which implies that their music is not authentic compared to Black music. The North American version of "Rubber Soul," released by Capitol Records, features a unique selection and editing, as with their previous works. In the UK, they added "Dreamer" and "It's Only Love" from the album "Help!", and included four songs—"Drive My Car," "I'm Alone," "If I'm Going to Fall in Love," and "The Love That Disappeared"—onto the album "Yesterday and Today." The North American version is a "folk-rock album" with a different feel from the UK version. A different master was also used, resulting in the so-called "false start" at the beginning of "Where Are You Going?" and a different mix of "Words of Love." The album "Rubber Soul" is considered the band's first important artistic achievement, had a tremendous influence on the music scene at the time, and is seen as a pioneering album that broadened the range of lyrics and music, opening up new possibilities in pop music. Furthermore, it is highly regarded as a foundational work for later psychedelic and progressive rock, and marked a broad shift in direction from single-centric music to album production consistently featuring high-quality tracks. For the Beatles, it was a turning point where they truly took the lead, achieving artistic leaps and advancements in recording technology. The album introduced new instruments such as the sitar, harmonium, and fuzz bass, enriching their expressiveness and arrangements. It is a crucial album that evolved from their early Merseybeat sound to that of *Revolver* and *Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band*.
As part of the "Alternate Album Collection" series, *Rubber Soul* is released in two editions: *Rubber Soul: Sessions* and *Rubber Soul: Versions*, both as 3-CD sets. *Rubber Soul: Sessions* is a 3-CD set containing 30 tracks from the "Multi-Track New Remix Album" and 60 tracks from "The Studio Recording Sessions."
DISC1: MULTITRACK NEW REMIX ALBUM + SINGLES + INSTRUMENTALS
This disc features all 14 tracks from the original album, newly edited multitrack versions, two singles not included on the album, and instrumental versions of all the album tracks. The first 14 tracks feature new stereo remixes using AI technology to separate vocals and choruses, and reconstruct the multitracks of each instrument. These new mixes differ from previous official stereo mixes and remastered versions, notably clearly separating the lead vocals and chorus, and providing a clearer sound image for each instrument. The placement of guitars and drums is also different, making the difference in sound clearly discernible. In addition to the original 1960s stereo, this disc includes new remixes by George Martin, making their CD debut, and many other remastered and remixed versions, including newly updated stereo remixes that are making their first appearance. The instrumental section in the second half focuses on the Beatles' performance itself on this album. It's not simply the original with the vocals removed; the balance of each instrument and the stereo separation have been newly edited from the multi-track recordings, resulting in a truly original instrumental album.
DISC2: THE STUDIO RECORDING SESSIONS 1
DISC3: THE STUDIO RECORDING SESSIONS 2
This disc contains studio session recordings tracing the album's production process from October 12th to November 1965, presented almost chronologically. It includes previously unreleased session recordings and those not included in official releases. In addition to previously released and official recordings, the latest updated editing improves sound quality, and many previously mono-only tracks are now presented in stereo for the first time. The tracks included in this release are the latest updated and continuously evolving demixes. They're not simply vocals and instruments separated; the vocals themselves are individually extracted, and overdubbed choruses and instruments are also individually separated, resulting in stereo remixes from multi-track sources. Iconic choral work in songs like "Nowhere Man," "In My Life," "If I Could Fall in Love," "Words of Love," "Think for Yourself," "You Want to See Me," and "Wait" features individually separated three-part harmonies by John, Paul, and George, or mixes of John's vocals alone or Paul's vocals alone, creating entirely new and unprecedented sound. While such extracted tracks have often been mono in the past, these are noteworthy original stereo remixes with different editing and mixing. Both in terms of the number of tracks and content, this is the best compilation of the latest updated tracks.
