This recording was taken in Nice on August 18, 1990, during the latter half of the Nude Tour. While the audience recording offers excellent sound quality, it had some incompleteness and other issues. This remastered recording features a complete Nice performance, complete with rehearsals, making this a truly complete release. There were two masters used for the main show. One was a very impressive audience recording with minimal cheering, remastered by io. It's an incomplete recording, with a few seconds cut when the tape was changed to The Question Of U / Electric Man, and all encores from Partyman onwards missing.
The other is titled Nice Can B So Nice, and is almost completely recorded except for the cut DAT intro, the first 20 minutes being a noisy young woman's voice, and fade processing on songs like Take Me With U and It Takes Two.
This time, based on the io remaster, we've added The Question Of U and Electric Man, as well as the entire Partyman intro to the encore from the fully recorded recordings, creating an even more complete version. Almost all of the issues with the Nice Can B So Nice recording have been resolved using the io remaster, making it a definitive release. The content is also excellent, with The Flow's rap during "The Future" and a more offbeat piano segment following "The Question Of U," followed by a beautiful, nearly full-length rendition of "Venus De Milo." A brief snippet of "An Honest Man" is also rare, inserted just before "Ain't No Way." And finally, the intense and menacing "Baby I'm A Star" jam! Enjoy this incredible moment, where Prince truly comes alive and plays freely. He repeatedly engages in the call-and-response of "N-I-C-E we know how to party," continuing for a whopping 20 minutes.
And without the rehearsal audio or cheers from that day, you can enjoy the high-quality audience recording, almost like a soundboard. He guides the band through chord progressions while playing through these funk and rock classics. Prince plays hard guitar and sings bluesy vocals on "Them Changes," reminiscent of Jimi Hendrix and Band of Gypsies, "Who Knows," and John Lee Hooker's "I'm In The Mood." The show begins with an interesting, jam-like instrumental rendition of "The Future," featuring improvised keyboards and a cool, eight-minute arrangement never heard in a main show. Then comes "Theives In The Temple," featuring what must be Prince's piano. It starts slowly, then the band joins in, faithfully recreating the studio version while adding a funkier edge. It's an incredibly delightful performance. Prince sings with a scat-like, bluesy voice, then segues into a Rock Da House jam, a phrase that sounds like an upbeat version of Cold Sweat. After a brief sound check, Rosie Gaines sings "A Natural Woman, I Never Loved A Man." And then, for what may be the only time, Natalie Cole plays "Insepable," her 1975 hit! Rosie sings, and Prince plays melancholic guitar!
