Le New Morning, Paris, July 23 (AM), 2010

+Bonus Le New Morning Audience DVDR 7 min.

Le New Morning. Fans of Prince's concerts know this venue as the hallowed ground where Prince's legendary after-shows took place. Le New Morning is synonymous with the after-shows of the Parade and Sign of the Times tours. Another legend was born on the 20Ten tour, this New Morning. Free Boot Generation presents the ultimate Prince gig with an audience recording of the highest quality sound! A long, long gig that can only be described as energetic, totaling over three hours! This is the ultimate Prince live performance, no longer an after-show! Stratus is incredible! It's neither jazz nor rock, but Prince and his band are playing epic music! Prince's powerful, band-master-like guitar is freaky and wilder than ever. From the start, the band's performance at the venerable venue of New Morning is challenging and mind-blowing! The wah-wah-driven guitar intro builds curiosity, building up interest in what will be played. The second track, "Brown Skin," features a darkly funky backing and Shelby's vocals, a cover of India Arie's "Brown Skin"! The sudden rare cover will have you incontinent! The tingly harmonica is irresistibly bluesy! Furthermore, Shelby's solo song, "I Never Loved A Man," is transformed into a blues arrangement by Prince, who brings in guitar at key moments, evolving it into something more blues than soul! The bluesy "Baby Love," primarily piano and harmonica, has a slower midsection and a varied hook, making it a tricky performance! In addition to his signature "squish, squish, squish" slurp, Prince also sings the other choruses freely, and in the second half, the quiet Prince erupts with guitar bang! The entire band enjoys playing freely, and the constant improvisation is unlike anything I've ever heard live! After Prince's shout-out in praise of Shelby, "Beautiful Strange" follows, with its simmering, assertive guitar that elicits roars of excitement! This slow, yet completely unhinged, version of "Beautiful Strange" will have you swooning! The vocals are unique, the guitar phrasing is outlandish, yet still retains the signature "Beautiful Strange" vibe! Even the sudden inclusion of Cassandra is a completely unexpected twist! The classic "Sometimes It Snows In April," which begins with a double intro of delayed guitar and quiet piano, is perfectly composed and sung, slow and emotional! Then, suddenly, he breaks down and sings, bringing out a unique style. This is a perfect version that differs from the usual live arrangement, thanks to his deep familiarity with the song! And "Hair," which is deeper than usual, has a Larry-esque vocal style, and the backing vocals are soulful, reminiscent of GCS! The jam in the second half is also cool, with choppy sounds and a bouncy groove! And a completely new performance! What is this heavy funk, characterized by a buzzing bass? Prince's unique singing style, with Shelby and the other backing vocalists dedicated to a dark chorus! Fred's harmonica, layered with keyboards, creates a super cool live bounce of "2045 Radical Man"! Such rare performances, only on New Morning! A funky moment that had the audience calling and responding to "Time To Get Funky" and "Le New Morning"! This sound is already a new genre, next level! Then, jazzy piano joins in, leading into Liv Warfield's "When Will We Be Paid?". The improvisational playing, and the audience joining in along with the piano, are as you'd expect from a New Morning audience, and they're really into it! The piano continues with "Que Sera, Sera"! The vocals are especially amazing, with Prince's backing vocals and the main vocals sounding just like Sly's! Even the shout-outs are completely reminiscent of Sly! And then Fred's harmonica comes in just right, making this a truly ecstatic version! It's a very funky, gospel-esque, all-black "Que Sera, Sera"! The sudden speed-up in the second half, with the vocal phrase "Ain't Nothing But Funk" is a real highlight! The second half is simply funky! The following "Controversy" is a unique version, with keyboards taking center stage, no Prince vocals, and the backing vocals taking center stage! The second half of the album features some funky, never-before-heard cutting, and the resulting buildup is so cool it'll give you goosebumps! Then there's the after-show-esque arrangement of "Eye Love U, But Eye Don't Trust U Anymore"! The fluidity is all thanks to Renato! He's there! Truly a man with a mastery of jazz, he was an indispensable figure for Prince! Let yourself be swept away by Renato and Prince's jazzy world! Next up is the rock-heavy Dreamer, with its long intro! The lingering guitar notes launch into "The Ride"! This development truly epitomizes the after-show vibe! The jazzy interplay between piano and guitar is thrilling! The blues continues with Joni Mitchell's Blue Motel, a song that was previously covered during the Nude tour, but who would have thought it would be played again? Fred adds some fantastic harmonica, and Prince's Mick Jagger impersonation of "Miss You" is epic! The moment Kiss cuts into the song and then begins is so cool it gives you goosebumps. Prince doesn't sing himself, but rather lets the audience sing along, a quality only an after-show can offer. Cream also gets the audience singing along again with a cheap keyboard, typical of after-shows! This is the after-show experience! "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" has a long piano intro, Prince's soft falsetto, and a James Brown phrase, "Please, please, don't go!" The tension is just like a James Brown mantra show! The medley, which begins with a long guitar intro and includes "Shake Your Body," "Everyday People," and "I Want To Take You Higher," is insanely funky and freaky! The heavy bass resonates throughout the long jam, which goes beyond the main track! And then another incredible song is played! The backing is "All The Critics Loves In NY," but Prince sings "Purple Music"! Anyone who's bought Prince bootlegs will know this early outtake, with Prince singing "So high" seductively! Who would have thought they'd even perform it live! While the Piano & Microphone tour featured a piano version, this one is performed with a band! This is a must-listen version of "All the Critics Loves In New Morning," with a slightly rearranged vocal section at the end, creating a unique phrasing! The vocal phrasing in "Body Heat" evokes the Parade aftershow and the Purple Rain tour rehearsal recordings! This is an aftershow version of the cover "Dance (Disco Heat)"! The call-and-response in "Oh New Morning" resonates directly! Continuing on, the audience sings along with Prince's piano on "Raspberry Beret"! Starfish And Coffee, the instrumental "Venud De Milo," and "Still Waiting"! Prince's falsetto is beautiful! Then, Prince plays his favorite new song from this period, "Future Soul Song"! Sung with Prince's piano accompaniment, it only lasts about two minutes, but it's rare to hear it played at this stage! And finally, "Purple Rain." This version is hands-down the best Purple Rain ever! It's a fantastic, jazzy, piano-driven version, with Prince changing the lyrics "Purple Rain" to "Oh New Morning," creating a song unlike anything you've ever heard before! The chorus melody is also completely different! It's a brand new arrangement prepared specifically for "New Morning"! It's no exaggeration to say that this is the most impactful version of "Purple Rain" of all the recordings! This one song would make a great after-show! A series of shocks, a legendary gig, Le New Morning, the birth of a legend!

This release also includes a special DVDR! Even though it's difficult to get in, this is a collection of HD-quality audience recordings! At just under 10 minutes in total, there's only a short amount of footage from Le New Morning, but the quality is excellent and you can really get a sense of the atmosphere between Prince and the band! Watching this while listening to the main film makes you feel like you're there! There's even a scene where Prince glares at the camera while filming.
