Live at The Manchester Academy, February 22, 2014

This recording captures the Manchester concert on February 22, 2014, with a fantastic audience sound that captures the atmosphere of the crowd's cheers.

The Prince version of "The Unexpected" plays through the PA system. Prince and the other band members appear midway through, eliciting a huge cheer. Then comes the hard rock version of "Let's Go Crazy." There's a sense of unity in the venue, but the cheers aren't overwhelming. The second song, surprisingly placed here, is "Guitar." Perhaps because the live show has just begun, the performance is incredibly energetic. They continue with rock in "Plectrum Electrum" and "FixUrLifeUp." Without stopping, they launch into "Something In The Water." The song begins with a thrilling piano intro where Prince sings, then the drums kick in and the band begins playing. His shouts about Manchester being at the heart of his heart are exhilarating, and the sound is great, making it a truly uplifting experience. "When We're Dancing Close And Slow" features Prince's vocals and is played well. Joshua is likely on keyboards here. "She's Always In My Hair," which he says will be old-school, is played with a different vocal style and guitar playing. He calls Donna on, who delivers a thrilling guitar solo. The then-new song "Funknroll" is very punky and sounds great, making it enjoyable. The sampler set includes a solid performance of "Sign O The Times," and "Hot Thing" features a shout from Booshakarakaboo. "Forever In My Life" is an alternate version that changes to a rhythmic and catchy riff in the latter half. The seamless transition from the perfect performance of "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" to "Crimson And Clover" is fantastic. Prince sings with a slightly unconventional style, but the audience sings the melody so well that Prince lets them sing along. The audience's reaction is wonderful, and Prince seems to be enjoying playing. Then, during the sampler set, "When Doves Cry" is played, and many in the audience are singing along without Prince even having to say "singing!" Prince is mostly focused on hyping up the crowd and providing backing vocals. The following song, "Alphabet St," is also a sing-along, and Prince delights the audience by singing that the driver is from Manchester. In the second half, Prince asks, "Can you hear the bass?" and then plays the bass along to "777-9311," looking incredibly funky. "Housequake" also features an introduction of Hannah, and Donna's guitar solo is included. When Donna is playing guitar, you can't hear any cutting, so she might be handling the rhythm. There was a massive singalong to "I Would Die 4 U," as expected. Prince was singing along, and the sound quality was so good that it felt very immersive and enjoyable to listen to. Then, "If I Was Your Girlfriend" wasn't played live, but played from a sampler set. Even though it was an instrumental, the audience was singing along, and next came "Purple Rain." This was incredible; Prince almost got drowned out by the massive singalong. There was even a part in the chorus where Prince stopped singing. But even so, Prince, who has probably sung it thousands of times, still seemed at ease. In fact, after that, it became a wonderful performance with the audience and Prince becoming one. The way "Screwdriver" abruptly transitioned into "Chaos And Disorder" was incredibly thrilling. I almost mistook it for a long version of "Screwdriver." It was a fast-paced, rocking version. Donna and Prince, though the emphasis was on Prince, it was amazing how much more wonderful the performance became with two guitars. And then the piano set. Unusually, they played "Starfish And Coffee." Prince gets the audience to clap, and then tries to get them to sing along. Of course, the audience sings along. "Diamonds and Pearls" is similar, with Prince as the teacher and the audience as the students. Prince leads the way with a wonderful piano version of "The Beautiful Ones," using falsetto, and then quiets the audience with a piano instrumental of "Under the Cherry Moon." Then, the audience listens intently as Prince sings "Sometimes It Snows in April." He says thank you, and then plays "Nothing Compares 2 U" on the piano. Prince shouts "Singing!" and gets them to sing the chorus. Then he calls Donna over for a guitar solo. The feeling of this rocking sound coming in at the perfect timing is exhilarating. Now it's Manchester's turn, and he gets the audience to sing along, bringing the piano set to a grand finale. From "The Max" onwards, Prince is on piano, but it becomes a band performance with drums playing. Donna plays phrases on guitar. Prince encourages the audience to clap their souls, and they all follow along faithfully. Then, before you know it, Prince is playing the guitar cutting of "Play That Funky Music." But it doesn't end there; Prince also gives a thank you as 3rdEyeGirl, and then they move on to the lively "Take Me With U" and "Raspberry Beret," which feature piano. Next is "Cool," where the piano has an interesting effect. You can hear the guitar cutting, but the attacking piano is layered on top, creating a jazzy version. It's a little sad that Shelby and the others aren't singing backing vocals, but this version is also nice. They even play "Gimme 5" at the end. It's funk and roll, so they move on to "Endorphine Machine." The shouts are roaring, the vocals are powerful, and the guitar is grooving. Rock, 'n' roll, say! Funk, 'n' roll, say! There's a call and response. The performance continues with "Bambi," and there is Prince, like a tireless child. Then, with its lively drums and intertwining guitar, "Colonized Mind" is a song whose identity is only revealed at first, and Prince sings it in a very unconventional way, making it feel incredibly fresh. The final song, "Cause And Effect," is probably sung by Ida, who harmonizes in the chorus. Prince tries to unite the audience with a call and response of Compassion. He says he'll be back after a short break, and then plays "Pretzelbodylogic" through the PA system before leaving the stage with the band. This is where a new song is actually played. "Stop This Train" and "The Beautiful Ones" are joined by a piano-like effect, and a completely unconventional remix of "Pretzelbodylogic" with the vocals unfolding like a sample is played. As a bonus, there's also a ripped audio track from the 3rdEyeGirl YouTube video.
